KATHMANDU — Renowned dancer and choreographer Poonam Kapali says dance is not only an art form but also a powerful medium for self-discipline, stress relief, physical fitness, and mental therapy.

Born in Kirtipur, Nepal, Kapali has dedicated more than 17 years to the field of dance. The eldest daughter in her family, she developed an early interest in dance during childhood, which later shaped her professional career.

Her formal dance training began in Grade 9 under choreographer Basant Shrestha. She gained early recognition after securing first place in Thali Dance, a milestone that marked the start of her professional journey. In 2008, she further expanded her presence by participating in Miss Newa: and later won first position in Image Channel’s Pratibha Aangan.

Kapali is widely known for her versatility. Her expertise spans traditional and contemporary styles, including Tamang Selo, Newari Jhyaangad, Thali Dance, Magar, Gurung, as well as contemporary, salsa, b-boying, and hip-hop. She has performed in more than 100 stage shows and has trained over 2,000 students.

She currently operates Taal Nrityabhumi in Tahachal along with her brother, providing dance education to students aged five to sixty-five. In addition, she serves as a dance instructor at several schools, including Darbar High School, Toddlers Academy, Rolling Stone School, Om Education, and Sitala Secondary School. She also conducts private classes and performs at cultural programs, events, and weddings.

Commenting on changing societal attitudes, Kapali noted that dance was once viewed negatively but is now increasingly recognized as a respected profession. She emphasized its growing role in stress management, physical health, mental well-being, and therapeutic practice.

A lifelong learner herself, Kapali stresses the importance of discipline, continuous practice, respect, humility, and positivity. She believes there is no age limit to learning dance, stating that it benefits people across all generations.

Concluding her journey, Kapali said success in any field comes through dedication, focus, perseverance, and a positive mindset. For her, dance is not merely a profession, but a way of life, healing, and lifelong fulfillment.
